CELTA Tips

English-teaching jobs in Spain differ by employer, age group, location, and experience requirements. If you are considering a CELTA, start with the jobs you would actually apply for, then decide whether the qualification and course format fit your plans. Training can strengthen an application, but it does not guarantee employment or permission to work in Spain.

CELTA Courses in Spain: The San Sebastián Option

ELTica currently lists face-to-face CELTA courses in Spain with its partner London School Teacher Training in San Sebastián. Below, you can compare the qualification with employer expectations and check the listed course details before applying.

English-Teaching Jobs in Spain: Start With the Employer

English-Teaching Jobs in Spain

Teaching settings include language schools and positions involving adults, children, or learners in partner institutions. For a sense of how roles differ, compare British Council teaching vacancies in Spain with its partner-related roles. These are examples from one employer, not a measure of the whole market.

That employer's Spain jobs guidance lists a university degree or equivalent, a recognised teaching qualification such as CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL, at least two years of English-teaching experience, and native-level English fluency or equivalent. A new CELTA may help with the qualification requirement, but it cannot supply the experience requirement on its own. Other employers set their own criteria.

When reading an advert, check the learners' ages, location, teaching schedule, required certificate, degree and experience rules, and work-authorisation requirements. A teaching certificate does not itself grant permission to work in Spain.

Choosing an English-Teaching Qualification

The course name matters less than what it includes and whether a target employer accepts it. Compare assessed practice, the learners you will teach during training, course format, and the exact wording in job adverts.

Training routePotential fitCheck before enrolling
CELTAAn initial teaching qualification with assessed practice teaching adultsAdmissions, practice schedule, fees, and employer acceptance
Trinity CertTESOLAn alternative initial qualificationAssessment, teaching practice, and employer acceptance
Other TEFL or TESOL coursesA particular format or professional-development goalProvider, supervised practice, assessment, and the requirements in your target adverts
DELTAExperienced teachers considering advanced developmentModule requirements, prior experience, and career fit

Because CELTA practice teaching focuses on adults, anyone hoping to teach children or teenagers should also ask employers about young-learner preparation. London School Teacher Training, the partner behind the San Sebastián CELTA listings, also offers The YLs Course: An Online Certificate in Teaching English to Children and Teenagers. It is an online course focused on young learners, not a replacement for CELTA; check the course page for its current dates, requirements, and fees. If you plan school-based lessons, Kuraplan's standards-aligned planning tools may help with preparation, but a planning tool is not a teaching qualification. You can also compare other English language teaching qualifications.

CELTA Courses in San Sebastián

ELTica's Spain CELTA listings show two full-time, four-week, face-to-face courses with London School Teacher Training in San Sebastián:

Listed intakeFormatListed tuition
28 June to 23 July 2027Face-to-face, four weeks€1,595
2 to 27 August 2027Face-to-face, four weeks€1,595

These are ELTica's listed partner intakes, not every teacher-training course available in Spain. Dates, fees, places, and terms may change, so check the live listing before booking travel or paying.

The partner center's course information describes a pre-interview task and an interview. After acceptance, it lists a €350 deposit to reserve a place and a €1,245 balance due at least four weeks before the course starts. Confirm the current payment and cancellation terms directly with the center.

ELTica is a directory of accredited CELTA, DELTA, TEFL, and TESOL courses, and it verifies training centers before their courses appear in the directory. If the San Sebastián dates or location do not work for you, compare CELTA courses by location and format. You do not necessarily need to train in the same country where you hope to teach.

What CELTA and DELTA Involve

According to Cambridge's CELTA guidance, CELTA includes six hours of assessed teaching practice with adult learners at a minimum of two ability levels. It also requires six hours of observation of experienced teachers, up to three of which may be on video. Expect preparation, feedback, and written assignments alongside scheduled sessions.

DELTA is an advanced qualification for teachers developing their practice further. Cambridge's DELTA guidance describes a written examination for Module 1 and a coursework portfolio that includes observed lessons for Module 2. If you already teach, compare DELTA requirements with the roles you want next.

Admission procedures vary. For example, a published CELTA application process describes a two-hour in-person interview with written and spoken tasks. That is another provider's example, not the stated process for the San Sebastián courses.

Course Costs, Applications, and Work Eligibility

Tuition is only part of the cost of a full-time course. Budget for accommodation, travel, preparation time, and any income you might forgo while studying. Check work eligibility separately from course admission.

For CELTA and DELTA, applicants submit an initial application and two English proficiency tasks, one written and one spoken, through ELTica. They can track their application status in their account. Applying through ELTica is free; tuition is separate, and the training center handles course delivery and payment.

Check Your Next Step

Choose three Spain-based jobs you would consider, then compare their qualification and experience requirements with the live San Sebastián CELTA intakes. If the course matches your goals, timetable, and budget, check the center's current terms before applying. Treat it as training for your next step, not a promise of a job.

Source clarification: New York education and certification rules do not determine English-teaching requirements in Spain. The previously cited New York City Comptroller audit of English learner services and 2026 update, along with New York State's certification guide, ESOL preparation requirements, and exam and pathway guidance, concern New York only. For Spain, follow relevant employers and Spanish authorities.
