Do TEFL Certificates Expire? What Still Counts

General tips

Most TEFL certificates do not expire and are treated as valid for life, although employers may question roughly two years without teaching. If your qualification hasn't expired, why might a school still refuse it?

The answer usually lies in the evidence behind the document: what training you completed, whether someone can verify it, and whether it meets the requirements for the job. Before paying for another course, establish which of those questions the school or visa office is asking.

Do TEFL Certificates Expire

Certificate validity and job eligibility aren't the same thing. Your certificate records completed training. A hiring manager decides whether that training, together with your experience and other documents, meets the school's requirements.

The TEFL Org's course FAQ describes its certificate as “valid for life” while recommending that graduates use the qualification within approximately 2 years because employers may question a long period without teaching. That's advice about employability, not an expiry date.

A teacher who has continued teaching can support an older qualification with references, lesson observations and recent responsibilities. A graduate who never entered a classroom has a different task: demonstrating that they can turn their training into effective lessons.

Why answers about validity conflict

TEFL has no single global awarding body or universal regulatory framework. Providers issue different qualifications, and employers, recruiters and immigration authorities decide what they recognise.

That means a certificate can be genuine and permanently issued without being suitable for every vacancy. A school might require assessed teaching practice that your course didn't include. Another might accept the training but need independent confirmation of your result.

Keep these distinctions clear:

  • Completion: Did you finish the course and meet its assessment requirements?
  • Recognition: Does the receiving organisation accept that qualification?
  • Readiness: Can you demonstrate that you're prepared to teach now?

A standard TEFL completion certificate usually doesn't operate like a professional licence with scheduled renewal. Don't assume that a request for recent experience means you need to purchase the qualification again.

Practical rule: Ask the school to identify the missing requirement before you spend money. An experience gap, an authentication problem and insufficient training require different solutions.

Course Deadlines Are Not Certificate Expiry

What expires and what only looks expired

ItemUsual limitWhat it blocksWhat remains
Course access before certificationExample: 90 days on a 120-hour courseLessons, assessment and certificate orderingNo certificate yet
Issued TEFL certificateUsually none; often valid for lifeNothing by the calendar aloneIssue date and verification status
Recent classroom experienceEmployers may question about 2 inactive yearsCompetitiveness for a new jobThe original certificate
Licence, membership or CPD recordSet by that body or countryOnly that extra authorisationThe TEFL certificate itself

The training-access example comes from TEFL Solutions' FAQ, which specifies a 90-day completion window for its 120-hour course and warns that access, assessment eligibility and certificate ordering may close permanently afterward. It isn't a universal deadline for TEFL courses.

The table's inactivity example is a hiring consideration, not a rule that automatically invalidates your award. Likewise, a membership or local authorisation can lapse without cancelling the underlying training certificate.

Before issuance and after issuance

Say a learner enrols, completes some lessons, then stops submitting work. When their enrolment closes, they may lose the opportunity to finish the assessments and receive a certificate. They haven't lost an existing qualification; they haven't yet earned one.

Contrast that with a graduate who completed all requirements and received the award. Closure of their learning account doesn't, by itself, erase the completed training. They might no longer be able to watch course videos, but the certificate records a separate event.

This distinction matters when reading an email that says your course is expiring. Check whether it refers to learning-platform access, an assignment deadline, an extension offer or the status of an issued document.

Before enrolling, save the terms covering:

  • Access closure: When lessons and downloadable materials become unavailable.
  • Assessment completion: When assignments, resubmissions and other required work must be finished.
  • Certificate arrangements: Whether you must request the document separately after passing.

Don't assume that finishing the videos means you've completed certification requirements. Outstanding assignments or identity checks can prevent issuance even when the progress bar looks complete.

Employer deadlines belong in a separate record

A school may also set a deadline for submitting references or authenticated documents. That deadline belongs to the application, not to the certificate.

For your own records, keep the enrolment terms, issued certificate and job requirements in separate folders. Label the certificate file with the qualification name and issue date rather than an invented expiry date.

Training centres should make the same distinction in their systems. Store completion, issuance and verification status separately from course-access closure and employer-specific recency notes. Otherwise, an administrative deadline can be mistaken for a cancelled qualification.

If someone says your TEFL has expired, ask them to identify the policy they mean. A clear answer should tell you whether to finish outstanding coursework, supply current classroom evidence or replace a missing document.

Read Your Certificate Before Buying Another Course

Start with the certificate and its supporting records, not a new application form. These checks help identify whether you need better paperwork or different training.

A four-step infographic providing tips on how to check your certificate before purchasing another training course.

Check the document systematically

  1. Match your name. Compare it with your passport. Keep marriage, deed-poll or other legal-name evidence if they differ.
  2. Record the issue date. Read it as the date of issuance, not an expiry date, unless the document explicitly describes a renewable authorisation.
  3. Identify the training. Find the course hours, assessment details and any observed teaching component.
  4. Check the awarding arrangements. Distinguish the training centre, awarding body and accreditor rather than treating their names as interchangeable.
  5. Test verification. Open the verification portal or locate the certificate number and records contact.
  6. Resolve missing evidence. Request a replacement or supporting record before assuming you need to retrain.

Destination Checks a Lifelong Certificate Must Pass

The TEFL Org's visa guidance identifies 120 hours as a common industry benchmark, while explaining that destinations can require additional qualifications and documents.

AttributeWhy it is requestedStill refused when
At least 120 hoursCommon international hiring benchmarkThe course is far shorter or hours are undocumented
AccreditationShows an external quality checkThe provider is unaccredited or unnamed
Observed or assessed teachingProves classroom performance, not only quizzesThe course was lectures or multiple choice only
Degree or transcriptsSome visas and schools require them besides TEFLOnly the TEFL file is submitted
Independent verificationConfirms the result and the holder’s nameThe certificate cannot be checked or the issuer cannot be reached

These are checks against the receiving organisation's rules, not universal grounds for refusal. Online delivery alone isn't a quality problem: CELTA online follows the same curriculum and assessment criteria as the face-to-face course and includes tutor support, assessed teaching practice with learners and feedback.

For courses other than CELTA and DELTA, our partner school issues a certificate through ELTica only when the course page says one is included. On successful completion, it's fully verifiable online, stored in your account, and accompanied by an email notification.

Passing CELTA and DELTA trainees receive official Cambridge certificates instead. The training centre mails yours to the address in your ELTica profile, so check that address before dispatch.

Certificates That Stay Valid but Fail Checks

A rejection can feel like a verdict on the age of your qualification when the problem is missing evidence.

A genuine award with the wrong training

Say you completed a short, lightly assessed online course. The provider issued the certificate, but your target school requires supervised classroom performance. The missing proof is assessed teaching, not a newer issue date.

Paying to reissue that document won't change the course you took. You need training that supplies the required practical component.

A lost file or a closed provider

Another applicant remembers passing but can't find the PDF. The useful request is a replacement certificate or verification record showing the holder, qualification and completion details. Losing the file doesn't undo the achievement.

A closed provider creates a harder problem. The paper may still represent completed training, but the recruiter can't obtain confirmation from an unanswered email address. Check whether the awarding body, accreditor or records custodian holds the result.

Certificates stored on our platform remain permanently verifiable online even if the issuing school is no longer active. Our certificate verification page provides a route for checking those stored credentials.

The video offers another way to consider certificate validity alongside the practical checks employers make.

A different name or an unverifiable scan

A teacher changes their surname after marriage and submits a certificate in their previous name. The award hasn't disappeared. The application needs legal-name evidence connecting the certificate holder to the passport.

An isolated scan presents a different difficulty. If it omits the course details and has no usable verification route, a recruiter may be unable to establish what it proves. Editing the scan yourself would make the situation worse; obtain confirmation from the responsible records holder.

A renewal payment cannot supply training you never completed or establish authenticity without supporting records.

Translation and legalisation are separate documentary requirements. Confirm the required language, authentication process and accepted document format with the receiving employer or relevant consular authority before ordering services.

The right outcome is specific: restore the evidence, connect the identities or obtain the training the role requires.

Refresh a TEFL When the Original Is Sound

A refresher makes sense when your qualification is credible but your classroom routines need attention. It's less useful when you're trying to repair an unsuitable initial course.

Choose development that produces useful evidence

TESOL International Association's continuing-education guidance supports ongoing professional development and describes IACET continuing-education units for eligible courses, while noting that acceptance is governed by the relevant jurisdiction.

Choose development around an identifiable teaching need. If you struggle to give clear instructions, a workshop with rehearsal and feedback will be more useful than passively watching general teaching presentations.

For a return to teaching, look for opportunities to plan, teach and reflect. Save the workshop record, tutor feedback and any documented supervised practice so you can explain what you worked on during an interview.

Match study to your starting point

Before enrolling, check the receiving employer's minimum training expectations, the assessment or observed-teaching component, and recognition of the issuing body. A development certificate shouldn't be presented as a replacement for an initial qualification it doesn't provide.

For applicants using our entry guidance, CELTA requires High C1-C2 English on the CEFR, secondary or higher education, and no teaching experience. It's an initial-training route, not a course reserved for established teachers.

DELTA requires a minimum English level of C1+, often C2 or IELTS 8+, a graduate or initial-certificate education level, and at least one year of teaching experience, ideally two years. A returning beginner shouldn't choose it just because the name sounds more advanced.

Choose the course that addresses your actual gap. Confidence, missing initial training and preparation for senior responsibilities are different educational goals.

CELTA or DELTA When the Gap Is Quality or Career Stage

CELTA can be an appropriate replacement when a generic TEFL doesn't meet a target employer's training expectations. DELTA suits teachers who already have classroom experience and want to deepen their professional knowledge and practice.

Cambridge's CELTA overview specifies at least 120 hours of tutor contact plus approximately 80 additional learning hours, with applicants aged at least 18, educated to the standard required for higher education, and proficient in English at approximately CEFR C1 or above.

The Cambridge CELTA syllabus requires four written assignments of 750 to 1,000 words each, covering adult learners and learning contexts, language systems, language skills, and reflection on classroom teaching with action points; candidates must pass both written assignments and teaching practice.

For DELTA, Cambridge's module guide describes Module 1 as two externally marked 90-minute papers separated by a 30-minute break, while Module 2 uses coursework, observed lessons, written background essays and an externally assessed observed lesson.

CELTA and DELTA Options Compared

CELTAGeneric TEFL refused; a stronger permanent qualification is neededFour 750 to 1,000 word assignments plus teaching practiceAt least 120 contact hours plus about 80 hours of study
DELTA Module 1Experienced teacher wanting an exam-based test of knowledgeTwo 90-minute papers with a 30-minute breakConcentrated exam preparation
DELTA Module 2Experienced teacher wanting classroom-based evidencePortfolio, observed lessons, written essays and an externally assessed lessonSustained planning across the course

Prepare for CELTA as practical training

Review your application before the interview. Be ready to explain your motivation, educational background and availability for study, rather than relying on enthusiasm alone.

For language-awareness tasks, practise explaining meaning, form and pronunciation using a clear example sentence. If you consult a grammar reference, make sure you can explain the answer in your own words.

Written assignments need focused analysis rather than broad essays about good teaching. Identify a learner problem, explain it accurately and connect your proposed classroom activity to that problem.

Teaching practice also requires preparation outside scheduled sessions. Plan around what learners should be able to do afterward, anticipate likely difficulties, and write instructions you can deliver clearly.

During feedback: Record a specific action for your next lesson. Trying to change everything at once makes it harder to judge whether your teaching improved.

Select the DELTA assessment you can sustain

Module 1 preparation calls for precise terminology, analysis and timed written responses. Module 2 requires access to teaching, sustained lesson planning and the ability to respond constructively to observation feedback.

Neither route renews an earlier TEFL. Use our DELTA pathway guide to understand the qualification before comparing centre support, assessment arrangements and suitable dates in Turkey and Spain.

Find a Course Worth Keeping in Turkey or Spain

Keep a qualification that meets your target role's requirements and can be checked. Spend your preparation time on the evidence the school needs, rather than purchasing an unnecessary renewal.

When you need different training, compare courses in Turkey and Spain by what you'll do and how you'll be assessed. An attractive timetable isn't enough if it leaves out the practical component your intended employer requires.

Compare the whole commitment

  • Format and attendance: Check whether the listed course is intensive, part-time, online or classroom-based, and whether you can attend every required session.
  • Assessment support: Read the arrangements for teaching practice, feedback, assignments and any resubmissions.
  • Entry and payment: Check the centre's requirements, its fee and the deposit deadline before accepting a place.

We're a directory of accredited CELTA, DELTA, TEFL and TESOL courses from training centres around the world, with current course discovery focused on Turkey and Spain. Centres named on our About page as trusting ELTica include ITI Istanbul, London School Teacher Training, MTS and TEFLism College London.

One scheduled example is the 5-week online ITI TEFL course listed for 31 Oct 2026 to 05 Dec 2026 at £220. Treat it as a specific future listing, not a general price or duration for TEFL training.

For CELTA and DELTA, applicants submit written and spoken English proficiency tasks through our platform. If the centre makes an official offer, you secure your place by paying its deposit before the stated deadline; each centre sets its own fee.

You can compare CELTA courses in Spain against your availability and preferred delivery format. Choose from active listings rather than assuming an older course page still represents an open intake.

For school managers organising the operational side of language teaching, Tutorbase for language schools is a separate resource to consider alongside teacher-development planning.

The decision isn't whether your certificate looks old. It's whether you can prove suitable training and demonstrate readiness for the work you want.
